VENTS MAGAZINE interview!!!

Hi Jay, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

It was a very productive year. Many goals achieved and some dreams came true. And somehow I managed to write a new album which I didn’t plan at all. My head was constantly somewhere else, but it came out somehow naturally. And honestly now I’m a bit lost because I have to set a new set of goals for the next period of my life, since I crossed out a lot of what I had in my list for years)

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Letter From Child”?

“Letter From Child” is a track that was written over a slow down-tempo beat, which combined simplicity of two acoustic melody lines and atmospheric production. The lead part is chill and groovy where the Guitar imitates a hip-hop/rnb singer’s voice and manner.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yes. I accidentally met a girl I had a short relationship with years ago. She was with a child. And I felt really-really awkward when he looked at me. It wasn’t my kid but I didn’t know how to behave next to him. And then I had a dream about this kid writing a letter “…Dear guy who is with my mom! If you’re not my dad – don’t touch her!”.

I know it’s weird but that dream got me thinking a lot on how I spent my last years)

Can you tell us more about the upcoming video and what would the concept be about?

Rhythm part is a dark side of me. Lead melody is a bright side. All track long they interact and sing together. I was living my life on both paths simultaneously, which led to a very interesting and highly emotional past with many mistakes but yet no regrets.

The single comes off your new album Bleeding Boyfriend – would you call this a conceptual record?

While making this record I answered a lot of questions to myself. I wasn’t happy in love for a long time, but at the same time I got tired of one night stands in clubs and bars. It didn’t fulfill me anymore. So I went through all my ex-girlfriends and was fighting for new loves searching for the answers. I guess I upset many people, But now I’m really close to my final destination. So the album happened to be a music diary of what was going on in my life.

What made you want to split the songs in book chapters?

First I wanted to write a short novel-confession of a modern day pick up artist who wants to quit the game on his terms. The story supposed to be motivational but with a tragic end where the guy pays the price for all the shortcuts in love. With actual music tracks to be soundtracks to the chapters.
Funny thing is that I send the first chapter to some editors and they all literally refunded my money and said: “I hope nobody ever reads it!”

What’s the story behind the title?

The Girl who made the guy quit the game hurt him as badly as the Girl who got him in the Game in the first place.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was very different from before. I suddenly lost desire to play music early this year. I wasn’t upset or anything – I gave it a month. Took out guitar from the case – still nothing. It got me thinking – “Well, that’s the natural end of me as a musician”. Then suddenly my heart was shaken due to some evens and the window of inspiration opened wide. I literally had to do nothing but just play and record. Track by track were coming out naturally from somewhere else. And the window closed as suddenly as it opened, so it happened to become a 6 track album.

Would you call this a departure from your previous record or rather a continuation?

I would call it a logical ending.

What role does Atlanta play in your music?

I used to walk a lot in downtown and some underground scene centers like Little Five and Downtown Decatur. I was getting energy from those streets, buildings and venues. But since a got my dream car – I’m driving a lot around the city and see Atlanta from a different view. I have to be honest – it’s the best city to drive a car at night!

What aspect of night life and social dymanics did you get to explore on this record?

It’s a dying Art form. I was lucky enough to explore it all the way. Meeting new friends and lovers every night in different places. But this path is not for everybody even though it’s full of fun memories.

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and concepts?

Nowhere else, but my personal adventures.

Any plans to hit the road?

I do miss the road and playing live. Hopefully it will happen a lot this year.

What else is happening next in Jay Katana’s world?

Violates / Violets – one of the best singers and songwriters in the world – Chris Edge. My brother in art and we finally did something together. New album coming out soon.
